GERTRUDE EDERLE
Gertrude Caroline Ederle was born in Manhattan on the 23th of October 1905,
and she died on November 30th, 2003 (she had 98 years old).
She was an American competition swimmer, olympic champion and world
record-holder in five events.
She was the first woman to swim across the English Chanel.
Her friends call her “Trudy” or “Gertie”, and people call her “Queen of the
waves”.
She was the third of six children and her parents were German inmigrants.
Her father was Henry Ederle, and her mother was Gertrude Anna Habertroh.
She had never married.
She was buried in the Woodlawn cemetery in The Bronx, New York City.
